Conversion of Existing Parts to Plastic

Click for expanded view

Nowhere are the cost and design benefits of gas assist injection molding more attractive than in the conversion of existing large, non-plastic parts. This is particularly true in conversion from metal, where tremendous cost savings and other benefits are possible by eliminating expensive, heavy, corrosion-prone parts such as covers, enclosures, access doors and panels. Depending on annual production volume and the cost of existing metal parts, it is not unusual for the ROI on the tooling investment to be one year or less, resulting in significant cost reduction during your product’s life cycle.

Another attractive conversion opportunity is the replacement of existing thermoformed, vacuum formed or pressure formed parts:

  • Minimal quantity requirements initially justified the high cost of formed parts but increases in quantity requirements now make expensive price of formed parts prohibitive. Typically, the cost savings will justify the investment in tooling to convert to an injection molded part.
  • Formed parts that require labor-intensive, expensive secondary operations such as gluing, bonding, trimming and machining. The part features requiring these operations can usually be incorporated into the design of the molded part, resulting in a significant savings.

Sajar can help walk you through your initial conversion analysis, be it material selection, part design assistance, part consolidation and testing and performance specifications. Chances are we’ve already converted a similar part or application to gas assist and can show you how.
